The 1902 Great Britain Matte Proof Silver Crown is a historic Edward VII coronation issue, certified by NGC as PF63 Matte. The obverse features the bare head portrait of King Edward VII facing right, designed by George William de Saulles, with the surrounding Latin legend identifying him as King of Great Britain, ruler of the British dominions, and Defender of the Faith. Unlike standard circulation strikes, this proof issue was specially produced with a matte finish, giving the coin a softer, more satiny appearance rather than a deeply mirrored surface.
The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous St. George slaying the dragon design, one of the most enduring and recognizable motifs in British coinage. The date “1902” appears below the scene, with the artist’s initials visible near the lower right. This crown has a denomination of 5 Shillings, measures 38.61 mm in diameter, weighs 28.276 grams, and is struck in .925 fine silver with an actual silver weight of approximately 0.8409 troy ounce.
Britain in 1902 was transitioning from the long Victorian era into the Edwardian period. Edward VII’s coronation took place in August 1902 after being delayed due to illness, and special matte proof coinage was issued to commemorate the new king’s reign. The same year also saw the end of the Second Boer War, a major imperial conflict that shaped British military and political policy. With its coronation-year significance, matte proof finish, large sterling silver format, and classic St. George reverse, this 1902 Great Britain Crown is a desirable piece for collectors of British, Edwardian, and world proof coinage.
