Details

The 1897 Great Britain Silver Crown is a late Victorian issue struck during Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee year, marking 60 years since her accession to the throne in 1837. Certified by NGC as MS61, this crown features the “Veiled Head” portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, designed by Sir Thomas Brock. The obverse inscription identifies Victoria as Queen of Great Britain, Defender of the Faith, and Empress of India, a title that reflected Britain’s imperial identity during the height of the Victorian era.

The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic St. George slaying the dragon design, one of the most famous motifs in British coinage. The date “1897” appears below the scene, while the edge is marked with the regnal year LX, representing the 60th year of Victoria’s reign. This crown has a denomination of 5 Shillings, measures 38.61 mm in diameter, weighs 28.276 grams, and is struck in .925 fine silver with an actual silver weight of approximately 0.8409 troy ounce. NGC lists the type as KM 783, with standard specifications of .925 silver, 28.276 grams, and 38.61 mm diameter.
