Details

The 1889 Great Britain Silver Crown is a Victorian issue from the Jubilee Head coinage series, certified by NGC as MS61. The obverse features Queen Victoria facing left, wearing a small crown and veil, a portrait introduced for her Golden Jubilee coinage in 1887 and designed by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm. The surrounding inscription identifies Victoria as Queen of Great Britain and Defender of the Faith. This large silver crown carries a denomination of 5 Shillings and reflects the formal royal portrait style of late 19th-century British coinage.

The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic St. George slaying the dragon design, one of the most famous and enduring motifs in British numismatics. The date “1889” appears below the scene, with the large 38.61 mm format allowing the dramatic reverse design to stand out clearly. This crown weighs 28.276 grams and is struck in .925 fine silver, giving it an actual silver weight of approximately 0.8409 troy ounce.
