The 1902 Great Britain Silver Crown is a first-year Edward VII issue struck after the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. Certified by NGC as MS61, this crown features the bare head portrait of King Edward VII facing right, designed by George William de Saulles. The obverse legend identifies Edward VII as King of Great Britain, ruler of the British dominions, and Defender of the Faith, reflecting Britain’s continued imperial identity at the beginning of the 20th century.

The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St. George slaying the dragon design, one of the most recognizable motifs in British coinage. The date “1902” appears below the design, with the large crown format giving the scene strong visual depth and classic appeal. This coin has a denomination of 5 Shillings, measures 38.61 mm in diameter, weighs 28.276 grams, and is struck in .925 fine silver with an actual silver weight of approximately 0.8409 troy ounce.

Britain in 1902 was entering the Edwardian era after more than six decades of Victorian rule. Edward VII’s coronation took place in August 1902 after being delayed due to illness, making coins from this year closely tied to the formal beginning of his reign. The same year also saw the end of the Second Boer War, a major imperial conflict that influenced British politics, military reform, and public opinion. With its first-year Edward VII portrait, large sterling silver composition, and classic St. George reverse, this 1902 Great Britain Crown is a desirable piece for collectors of British, Edwardian, and world silver coinage.
