The 1902 Great Britain Silver Crown is an Edward VII issue struck during the first coinage year of his reign, following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. Certified by NGC as MS63, this crown features the bare head portrait of King Edward VII facing right, designed by George William de Saulles. The obverse legend identifies Edward VII as King of Great Britain, ruler of the British dominions, and Defender of the Faith, reflecting the continued imperial identity of Britain at the beginning of the 20th century.

The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St. George slaying the dragon design, a classic British motif used on crowns and sovereigns. The date “1902” appears below the design, and the large silver format gives the scene strong depth and eye appeal. This crown has a denomination of 5 Shillings, measures 38.61 mm in diameter, weighs 28.276 grams, and is struck in .925 fine silver with an actual silver weight of approximately 0.8409 troy ounce.

Britain in 1902 was experiencing a major transition from the Victorian era into the Edwardian period. Edward VII’s coronation took place in August 1902 after being delayed due to illness, making coins from this year especially connected to the beginning of his reign. The same year also marked the end of the Second Boer War, a costly conflict that shaped British politics, military reform, and imperial policy. With its first-year Edward VII portrait, large sterling silver composition, and classic St. George reverse, this 1902 Great Britain Crown is a desirable piece for collectors of British, Edwardian, and world silver coinage.
