The 1897 Great Britain Silver Crown is a late Victorian issue from Queen Victoria’s “Veiled Head” coinage, certified by NGC as MS60. The obverse features Sir Thomas Brock’s mature portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, wearing a small crown beneath a veil. The surrounding inscription identifies her as Queen of Great Britain, Defender of the Faith, and Empress of India, reflecting Britain’s imperial identity during the final years of the 19th century. This example carries the regnal year LXI, marking the 61st year of Victoria’s reign.
The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St. George slaying the dragon design, one of the most enduring images in British coinage. The date “1897” appears below the scene, with the large silver format giving the design strong visual depth and historical presence. This crown has a denomination of 5 Shillings, measures 38.61 mm in diameter, weighs 28.28 grams, and is struck in .925 fine silver with an actual silver weight of approximately 0.8409 troy ounce. NGC lists the Victoria Veiled Head crown type as KM 783, with the standard silver crown specifications for the series.
Britain in 1897 was celebrating Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years since her accession in 1837. The event became a major imperial celebration, presenting Victoria as both monarch of Great Britain and Empress of India at the height of the British Empire. This crown was issued during that important jubilee year, making it especially desirable for collectors of Victorian coinage, British Empire history, and large-format world silver coins.
