The 1851-O Seated Liberty Dime is a scarce pre-Civil War silver issue struck at the New Orleans Mint and certified PCGS AU50. This example is presented in a special S.S. Central America shipwreck holder with a pinch of recovered California gold dust and a Bob Evans signed certification label. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole topped by a Liberty cap, with a shield at her side and the date “1851” below. The reverse displays an open wreath surrounding the denomination “ONE DIME,” with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around the border.
The added shipwreck presentation gives this piece strong historical appeal. The S.S. Central America, often called the “Ship of Gold,” sank in 1857 while carrying passengers and treasure from the California Gold Rush era. Specifications include an 1851 year of issue, 10 cent denomination, 17.9 mm diameter, approximately 1.2 mm thickness, 2.67 gram weight, reeded edge, and 90% silver, 10% copper composition. The 1851-O Seated Liberty Dime had a reported mintage of 400,000 pieces, making surviving examples collectible for their New Orleans Mint origin, early Seated Liberty design, and unique shipwreck-themed holder.
