Certified Buffalo Nickel 1937-D 3 Legs AU50 NGC

The 1937-D 3 Legs Buffalo Nickel is one of the most famous and desirable varieties in the Buffalo nickel series. Struck at the Denver Mint, this variety was created after a worn reverse die developed clash marks from the obverse and reverse dies striking each other without a planchet between them. Rather than replacing the die, Mint workers attempted to polish away the damage. The polishing was too aggressive and removed the shallowest portion of the bison’s front right leg between the hoof and thigh. The hoof remained visible, but most of the leg disappeared, creating the iconic “3 Legs” appearance. This example is certified by NGC as AU 50, showing light circulated wear while retaining strong major design detail.
