The 1879 Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle is a classic nineteenth-century United States $5 gold coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this issue belongs to the With Motto Liberty Head Half Eagle type, which incorporated IN GOD WE TRUST on a ribbon above the eagle beginning in 1866. The Philadelphia Mint struck 301,920 examples dated 1879. Each coin is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, weighs 8.36 grams, and contains approximately 0.2419 troy ounce of pure gold.
