  • Description:

The 2016-S Shawnee (IL) ATB Quarter showcases a famous national forest. The Shawnee National Forest is located in Southern Illinois and contains 280,000 acres of federally owned land. Established as a National Forest, by president Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939, most of the forest was just exhausted farmland. Over the next couple of decades, conservationists planted a variety of trees, in hopes to prevent erosion and rebuild soil. Shawnee National Forest is also home to numerous wildlife species and geological features. Some of these features include a small creek that has created a 200 foot deep canyon and Hicks Dome, which is the result of a meteorite collision.

The American The Beautiful Quarter Program introduces their 31st coin, the Shawnee National Forest. The program has plans of producing 56 coins total, with five coins minted every year. Each coin showcases a national landmark, park, or forest, memorializing the natural beauty that America offers.
