Details

The 1864 Indian Head Cent With L is a significant variety from a major transitional year in United States cent production. During 1864, the Mint changed the Indian Head Cent from the heavier copper-nickel composition to a lighter bronze alloy of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc. This bronze cent weighs 3.11 grams, measures 19 mm in diameter and approximately 1.47 mm thick. The desirable With L variety displays designer James Barton Longacre's initial on the ribbon behind Liberty's neck. This example has been certified by ANACS as MS61 Brown and additionally attributed as Clashed Dies.
