  • Description:

The Barber design wasn't loved but not hated by the public when it was first released in 1892. This design was created by Chief Engraver, William Barber, and graced the US dime, quarter, and half dollar until 1916. The Seated Liberty was the design, at the time, and Mint Director, Edward Leech desired to change the design for a new era. Instead of just designating a new design, Leech thought it would be a good idea to hold a competition among the local artists to see who would have the best design. As a bonus, Leech offered the winner a cash prize to entice any forth comers. Unfortunately, the artists wanted different terms and a better prize so the competition was closed with still no design chosen. Leech finally approached Barber and agreed on a design that suited both of their distinct tastes.

The 1892-O Barber Quarter is the first of the series to ever be minted and contains a competitive mintage compared to its Philadelphia Mint counterpart. With a mintage of only 2.6 million minted for that year, the 1892-O Barber Quarter can be a tough coin to locate, especially in the higher grades. In about good condition, this quarter will have a good amount of abrasion, with Liberty's headpiece and facial details greatly lacking. Liberty is pictured on the obverse, of the Barber Quarter, adorned in an Acanthus leaf cap. Liberty began as a Grecian Goddess and has been adapted on US currency through the years. She is accompanied by the coin's date of mintage, which is inscribed below her portrait. The reverse showcases the nation's official seal, of an eagle holding a shield and is surrounded by 13 stars honoring the original 13 colonies. The 1892-O Barber Quarter will be packaged in a coin flip during shipment.
