The 1871 Three Cent Silver is a late-series U.S. proof issue from the short-lived silver three-cent denomination, often called a “trime.” This example is certified by PCGS as PR58+, indicating a proof coin with light circulation or handling wear while still retaining strong detail. The obverse features the Type 3 design by James B. Longacre, with a six-pointed star, central shield, and decorative outlines. The reverse displays the Roman numeral “III” within a wreath, surrounded by stars.
Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1871 Three Cent Silver was produced during the final years of the series, which ended in 1873. Proof mintage for the 1871 issue was only 960 coins, making it an appealing collectible for U.S. type coin collectors, proof specialists, and those seeking obsolete silver denominations. The small size, historic denomination, and low proof mintage give this coin strong numismatic interest beyond its silver content.
