The 1871 Seated Liberty Half Dime is a scarce proof issue from the final years of the United States half dime series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin is certified by PCGS as PR63 and features the classic Seated Liberty design, with Liberty seated beside a shield and holding a pole topped with a cap. The reverse displays the denomination “HALF DIME” within a detailed wreath, giving the small silver coin a balanced and elegant Civil War-era design.
This proof half dime was struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, with a weight of 1.24 grams and a diameter of approximately 15.5–15.9 mm. PCGS lists the proof mintage for the 1871 Half Dime at only 960 pieces, making it a desirable low-mintage example for collectors of Liberty Seated coinage, proof type coins, and obsolete U.S. denominations. The half dime denomination was discontinued after 1873, adding further historical appeal to this compact silver issue.
