  • Description:

The Barber series was minted for almost 25 years before being replaced with other coins. The US Mint greatly desired to come up with a more originally designed coin. The Mint Director at the time, Robert Woolley, asked sculptor Hermon Atkins MacNeil, to design the new Standing Liberty Quarter. At first, MacNeil designed a very militaristic portrait of Liberty but was turned down. He then added dolphins to represent the the famous oceans but the US Mint went behind his back to make more alterations. After several revisions, the Standing Liberty depicts a warrior-like Lady Liberty, wearing chain mail on her chest and is holding a shield with one hand. The other hand is holding an olive branch, signifying peace. The date of mintage is inscribed underneath Liberty's sandaled feet. The reverse features a large eagle in flight, with the coin's monetary denomination of a quarter dollar. In 1917, MacNeil designed the final Standing Liberty Quarter, appeasing both the US Mint and the public.

Although there were some low mintage years, the Standing Liberty Quarter's average mintage is quite high. Until 1925, the Standing Liberty was weakly struck, causing the coin's date to wear off without difficulty. The issue was finally fixed in 1925, but many circulated quarters still have weak dates, even if they have a higher grade. The 1929 Standing Liberty Quarter has a high mintage of over 11 million and is in very fine condition. You will find that locating the majority of the Standing Liberty Quarter dates in very fine is your best bet; few of this series are found in higher grades. The 1929 Standing Liberty Quarter contains a little wear but its date may be more worn than the rest of the coin, due to the weak strike.
