  • Description:

Using the same design on all coin denominations was the trend until 1916, wherein the US Mint assigned different designs to all the denominational coins. The Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mint participated in the production of the Seated Liberty Dime. The San Francisco Mint was established until 1854 so it joined in later on for the series. The Philadelphia Mint was the first mint to be commissioned in the US, as a means to put the new nation on the map for international commerce. The first mint facility was established by the original Founding Fathers and has had its hand in every successful coin series since!

The 1853 Seated Liberty Dime with Arrows was minted by the Philadelphia Mint and has a high mintage of over 12 million. The 1853 Seated Liberty Dime is in very fine condition with wear and lack of prominent detailing on the main coin details. In 1853 and 1873, the US Mint placed arrows on either side of the date on the Seated Liberty series then promptly removed them the next year. Dating back to the Roman Empire and perhaps, before, the Goddess of Liberty has been used in many cultures to celebrate the concept of liberty and freedom from oppressors. The goddess has been used on currency worldwide, especially in the US, and still is a nationwide icon. Normally, the goddess is depicted wearing a draped robe that loosely fits and her hands are usually occupied holding other significant symbols, such as olive branches, arrows, or a torch. For the US, the most prominent depiction stands in New York's harbor, a gift from the French in 1886. Lady Liberty continues to be used on US currency, although her aesthetic may change through the years.
