  • Description:

The Peace silver dollar offered a new wave of currency, representing a symbol of peace that the US dollar has never symbolized before. When the Pittman Act of 1918 was passed, the US Mint was called to produce millions of silver dollars by the year of 1928. Since the Morgan silver dollar was the most recent dollar minted, the US Mint wanted to cut corners and use the Morgan's design as a default. Many numismatists protested for a new design, one that embraced peace in the 20th century. It was finally decided upon to use the Goddess of Liberty on the obverse but keep an eagle design for the reverse. Your 1923-S Peace dollar displays Lady Liberty wearing a tiara of sun rays, similar to the statue in Manhattan's harbor. Your coin is also in extra fine condition, exhibiting wear on the main image designs but is still clinging to the original mint luster.
