The 1796 Mo FM Mexico 8 Reales, certified MS60 by NGC, is a historic Spanish colonial silver crown struck at the Mexico City Mint during the reign of King Charles IV of Spain. Often referred to as a “Spanish Dollar” or “Piece of Eight,” the 8 Reales denomination became one of the most influential trade coins in world history and circulated extensively throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. This example bears the “Mo” mintmark for Mexico City along with the assayer initials “FM,” representing Francisco de la Peña and Manuel de la Peña, mint officials responsible for quality control during the period.
The obverse features a right-facing portrait of King Charles IV with the Latin inscription identifying him as King of Spain by the grace of God. The reverse displays the crowned Spanish coat of arms flanked by the Pillars of Hercules wrapped with banners reading “PLUS ULTRA,” symbolizing Spain’s vast overseas empire. These large silver coins were struck using silver mined primarily from the rich mines of New Spain and became the backbone of international commerce during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
