The 1869-A France 100 Francs Gold coin, certified AU58 by NGC, is a remarkable large-format gold issue struck during the final years of the Second French Empire under Emperor Napoleon III. Minted at the Paris Mint, identified by the “A” mintmark, this impressive coin contains 0.9335 troy ounces of .900 fine gold and represents one of the largest circulating gold denominations issued by 19th-century France. The obverse features the laureate portrait of Napoleon III facing right, engraved by Jean-Jacques Barre, surrounded by the inscription “NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR.” The reverse displays the ornate imperial arms of France beneath the imperial crown and mantle, with the denomination “100 FRANCS” and the date below.

The year 1869 was a turbulent and transitional time for France. Napoleon III’s empire was beginning to weaken politically and economically as tensions across Europe intensified ahead of the Franco-Prussian War, which would erupt just one year later in 1870 and ultimately lead to the collapse of the Second Empire. Coins from these later imperial years carry additional historical significance because they represent the final chapter of Napoleon III’s reign before the establishment of the French Third Republic. Large gold denominations such as the 100 Francs were primarily used for banking, international trade, and wealth storage rather than everyday circulation, making surviving examples especially desirable among collectors today.

This example, graded About Uncirculated 58 by NGC, retains sharp detail throughout both the portrait and the intricate reverse arms. Significant original mint luster remains visible across the surfaces, while only light wear appears on the highest points of the design. The coin exhibits attractive golden coloration and strong eye appeal for the grade, particularly for a large circulation gold issue of the era.
