This exceptional 1754-P Bolivia 8 Reales represents an important surviving example of 18th-century Spanish colonial coinage. Struck at the historic Potosí Mint in Bolivia and recovered as part of the Cerro Rico Hoard, this specimen has been authenticated and certified by NGC as AU (About Uncirculated) – Excavation Recovery. Widely known as the “Piece of Eight,” the 8 Reales was among the most significant silver denominations of its era. Produced from the immense silver resources of the Cerro Rico region, these coins circulated extensively throughout the Americas and became an internationally recognized medium of exchange, playing an important role in global commerce. The denomination also holds a significant place in early United States monetary history. Foreign silver dollars, including qualifying Bolivian issues, circulated alongside early U.S. coinage and were officially recognized as legal tender in the United States until 1857. Their historical importance to the American monetary system is documented in the Guide Book of United States Coins (“Red Book”). More than 270 years after it was struck, this remarkable specimen combines historic Potosí Mint production, NGC certification, and documented Cerro Rico Hoard provenance, making it an impressive addition to an advanced collection of historic world or early American-related coinage.
