The 1900 Lafayette Dollar, certified MS63 by PCGS, is one of the most historically significant and distinctive commemorative silver dollars ever issued by the United States Mint. Struck to help fund the erection of an equestrian statue of the Marquis de Lafayette in Paris, this coin commemorates the deep alliance between France and the United States during the American Revolutionary War. It also holds the distinction of being the first U.S. commemorative silver dollar and the first U.S. coin to depict historical American figures rather than allegorical Liberty alone.

The obverse features conjoined busts of George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette facing right, symbolizing the friendship and military partnership between the two nations. The reverse displays Lafayette on horseback based on the statue erected in Paris in his honor. The inscription references the “Youth of the United States” contributing to the memorial project, highlighting the patriotic fundraising effort behind the coin’s issuance. Although dated 1900 on the reverse, the coins were actually struck in December 1899 for release during the following year.
