The 1887 Great Britain Gold Five Sovereign, also known as the Quintuple Sovereign or Five Pounds gold coin, was issued during Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee year, celebrating the 50th anniversary of her reign. This NGC AU58 example features the Jubilee Head portrait of Queen Victoria on the obverse, designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm, with the Queen shown crowned, veiled, and facing left. The surrounding legend reads “VICTORIA D:G: BRITT: REG:F:D:,” identifying her as Queen of the Britains and Defender of the Faith. The Jubilee coinage of 1887 marked a major redesign of British coinage and remains one of the most recognized late Victorian gold issues.

The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St. George and the Dragon design, showing St. George mounted on horseback as he defeats the dragon below. The date “1887” appears in the exergue. Struck by The Royal Mint in 22 karat gold, this Five Sovereign carries a denomination of Five Pounds and contains 39.94 grams of .9167 fine gold, with a diameter of 36.0 mm and thickness of approximately 2.9 mm. Numista lists the 1887 issue as a standard circulation coin, though the Five Sovereign denomination was produced only intermittently and is highly collectible today. This large-format Victorian gold coin combines historic Jubilee significance, classic British artistry, and substantial gold content in one impressive, certified example.
