The 1902 Great Britain Gold Five Sovereign, also known as the Five Pounds or Quintuple Sovereign, was issued for the coinage of King Edward VII following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. This PCGS PR58 example is the matte proof issue, cataloged as S-3966, and features the bare head portrait of Edward VII facing right on the obverse, designed by George William de Saulles. The surrounding legend reads “EDWARDVS VII D:G: BRITT: OMN: REX F:D: IND: IMP:,” identifying Edward as King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, and Emperor of India.

The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic St. George and the Dragon design, with St. George mounted on horseback as he defeats the dragon below. The date “1902” appears in the exergue. Struck by The Royal Mint in 22 karat gold with a matte proof finish, this Five Sovereign was part of the 1902 coronation coinage and represents the only Five Pounds type issued during Edward VII’s reign. Specifications include a denomination of £5, weight of approximately 39.94 grams, .9167 gold fineness, 36.0 mm diameter, and approximately 2.9 mm thickness. Heritage Auctions lists the 1902 matte proof mintage at 8,066 pieces, making this a desirable large-format British gold issue with strong historical and collector appeal.
