  • Description:

The design on the reverse of the 2001 silver Kangaroo may catch your attention. The Aboriginal design was created by artist, Jeanette Timbery, who was born and raised in New South Wales. She was first introduced to art as a child, watching her father paint and helping him in the studio. This mosaic displays a kangaroo, made up of lines and dots, surrounded by other dots. This piece is very original in design and still shows off the popular frosted finish with the dots and kangaroo having proof-like traits. The coin's weight, purity, and denomination are all included on the reverse as well. Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse side of this coin. She represents the Commonwealth realms, countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Jamaica. Her portrait was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1997 to honor the Queen and to present a more realistic picture of what she actually looks like. Along with her name, "Australia," and "2001," are inscribed on the outer edge of the coin.

Being the ninth installment of the Royal Australian Mint's silver Kangaroo series, 45,562 coins were minted for this year. The Royal Australian Mint, located in Canberra, Australia, started this silver bullion series in 1993. The intention behind producing this series was to offer a bullion collection, that was also considered legal tender, and create different designs on the reverse every year. Coin collectors everywhere anxiously await the minting of the Kangaroo every year, just to see the new design. But the annual design isn't the only aspect of the coins collectors look forward to. The Royal Australian Mint makes sure to keep the production at a minimum, causing a lower mintage to increase the numismatic value of the coin. Whether you are looking to invest and buy silver coins online or looking for a starter collection, the silver Kangaroo series is a prominent collection that will make any collector satisfied.
