The 2017-P Effigy Mounds (IO) Uncirculated Quarter highlights an ancient monument. Effigy Mounds National Monument hosts over 200 prehistoric mounds, built by Native Americans. The Effigy Mounds were built at the first of the millennium and many represent animals, such as birds and bears. The people of the Woodland Culture were more likely to be the genius artists of these everlasting mounds. The Effigy Mounds National Monument is located in Iowa and runs adjacent to Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, the Driftless Area National Wildlife Refuge, and the Yellow River State Forest.
