This 1953 Southern Rhodesia Crown was issued to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Cecil Rhodes (1853–1902), founder of the British South Africa Company and a pivotal figure in the colonization of Southern Africa. The obverse features the laureate bust of a young Queen Elizabeth II facing right, with the legend “QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND.” The reverse showcases a portrait of Cecil Rhodes surrounded by three shields depicting the coats of arms of Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia, and Nyasaland, along with the dates “1853” and “1902,” and the inscription “SOUTHERN RHODESIA CROWN 1953.”
