  • Description:

The 1878 Morgan proved that the US Mint got its act together and changed the die for the Morgan design. Instead of 7 tail feathers, the eagle was awarded 8. Instead of the pathetic-looking eagle with a caved-in chest, the eagle was given a proud and puffed chest instead. Your 1879 Morgan was minted in Philadelphia and doesn't carry a mint-mark. The Philadelphia Mint was the first mint to be established in the US. The US desperately needed an identity but also a means to international commerce so the Founding Fathers decided that a national mint was the answer. The Mint Act officially announced the opening of the Philadelphia Mint and also instituted guidelines for the newly minted currency. A dollar decimal system would be used to assign the currency with legal tender values. This 1879 Morgan is considered to be in very fine condition, exhibiting noticeable amounts of wear on the coin.
