  • Description:

Being first established in 1854 as a result of the gold mines of the California Gold Rush, the San Francisco Mint is one of the most successful mints that took part in the production of the Morgans. It turned $4 million dollars of gold into bullion coins in just its first year of production. This signified what would be just the beginning of an incredibly lucrative business. It expanded so fast, it needed another building to mint out of. The Granite Lady building, where it withheld its structure during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, became the second building for the San Francisco Mint. The building wasn't actually made of granite, just the basement was but the name was used for marketing and stuck. In 1937, it moved to its final facility that is still the San Fran Mint today. Your 1883-S Morgan carries the "S" mint-mark to signify where it was minted and is in fine condition.
