Known as "the king of the skies," and the highest messenger to the gods, the Eagle has been the chosen symbol for many nations and seals. Mexico is no different with the regal sign of the eagle displayed on their Coat of Arms. The Coat of Arms is featured on the Mexican Silver Libertad showing an eagle atop a prickly pear cactus and holding a large snake in its mouth. A winged Victoria is presented on the obverse of the Libertad. Her symbolism to the coin is of victory and independence. It is this side of the coin that also states the authenticity of the coin, the coin's year of mintage, and that the coin was minted at the Mexican Mint. The two volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl, are also represented on the obverse, giving a nod to Mexico's traditional folklore.
Being one of the oldest mints in the Americas, the Mexican Mint has been producing coins since 1535. The ruler of Spain, at the time, issued a decree by the Spanish Crown to establish the first mint in the Americas. The Mexican Mint produced the silver 1 peso that circulated throughout the US and Asia and became the basis for other countries' modern national currencies such as the Japanense yen or the Chinese yuan. Its ever-growing popularity makes the Mexican Libertad an intriguing coin collection to start for anyone looking to invest and buy silver online.
