The France 100 Francs Gold 1857-A, certified AU58 by NGC, is a large and impressive gold coin struck during the reign of Emperor Napoleon III under the Second French Empire. Minted at the Paris Mint, designated by the “A” mintmark, this substantial gold issue contains 0.9335 troy ounces of gold and represents one of the highest circulating denominations produced by France during the mid-19th century. The obverse features a laureate portrait of Napoleon III facing right, designed by Jean-Jacques Barre, with the inscription “NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR.” The reverse displays the ornate imperial coat of arms of the Second Empire crowned beneath an imperial mantle, along with the denomination “100 FR” and the date below.
The 1850s were a transformative period for France. Under Napoleon III, the nation experienced rapid industrial growth, modernization of Paris under Baron Haussmann, and expanding global influence. Gold coinage such as the 100 Francs served not only as currency but also as a symbol of imperial wealth and financial strength during a period of economic expansion. These large gold pieces circulated far less frequently than smaller denominations and were often stored as wealth reserves, making surviving examples especially desirable today.
This example, graded About Uncirculated 58 by NGC, retains strong original detail with only slight wear visible on the highest points of the design. The surfaces display attractive golden color and considerable remaining luster, especially for a large-format circulation gold issue from the era. The intricate reverse arms and sharp portrait details remain highly appealing, giving the coin excellent eye appeal for the assigned grade.
