The 1903-O $10 Liberty Head Gold Eagle is a classic pre-1933 United States gold coin struck at the New Orleans Mint, a facility known for producing lower mintage and often more challenging issues for collectors. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY,” surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1903 below. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings clutching arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing strength and peace, along with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TEN D.”
This example is certified PCGS MS62 and further endorsed with a CAC sticker, indicating solid quality for the assigned grade. Coins from the New Orleans Mint, especially gold issues, are widely collected due to their historical significance and typically lower survival rates in higher mint state grades. The surfaces of this piece display original mint luster with moderate marks consistent with the MS62 grade, while still maintaining strong overall eye appeal. Struck in .900 fine gold with a composition of 90% gold and 10% copper, the coin contains approximately 0.4838 troy ounces of gold. It measures 27.0 mm in diameter with an approximate thickness of 2.03 mm and carries a denomination of ten dollars, making it a substantial and historically important addition to any U.S. gold coin collection.
