The 1913 Indian Head Quarter Eagle is one of the most distinctive gold coins ever produced by the United States Mint. Designed by renowned sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, this innovative $2.50 gold piece features an incuse, or sunken, design in which the devices and inscriptions are recessed below the surface rather than raised above it. Introduced in 1908, the Indian Head Quarter Eagle broke dramatically from traditional U.S. coinage and remains a favorite among collectors today.
