  • Description:

Starting in 1982, the Mexican Silver Libertad series comes from one of the oldest mints in the Americas: the Mexican Mint. Each year, a new coin is minted, displaying the same design on the front and back of the coin; the only difference is the year. The Mexican Mint was first established in 1585 by the Spanish ruler, Antonio de Mendoza. He issued a decree from the Spanish Crown to build the first mint in the Americas. The Silver Mexican Libertad series is quickly gaining attention worldwide, due its beautifully designed coins and the interesting history and mythology that comes along with them. Each coin is guaranteed .999 pure silver, in brilliant uncirculated condition, and come protected in plastic coin flips.

The reverse design on the 1991 Mexican Libertad parades the Mexican Coat of Arms. The Mexican Coat of Arms shows a large eagle, holding a snake in its mouth while perched on some prickly cactus. This design was inspired by ancient legends and paintings that contained an eagle catching a snake. In ancient Roman mythology, Victoria was pronounced the goddess of victory. Many nations used her image as a symbol to represent their success and independence. Mexico chose Victoria to grace the obverse side of the silver coin as a statement of how far they have come has a country and a nation. Only half of her body is covered by a streaming drape that is lightly touched by the wind. In the far distance are the famous volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Izztaccihuatl. In Mexican mythology, these volcanoes are said to be once star-crossed lovers who desired to spend eternity side-by-side. "1 onza plata pura," "2004," and "ley .999," are all inscribed on the edge of the coin to state its purity. Whether you are searching for silver bullion or interested in numismatic value, these Mexican Libertads are the perfect fit for any collector.
