  • Description:

The obverse of the Libertad is what usually gets people's attention. Front and center is the remarkable winged Victoria, who represents Mexican Independence Victory Column. She is graceful, yet strong with her beautiful wings extending to the top of the coin. She is draped in a cascading scarf that only covers her bottom half. In the far background, two large volcanoes are shown. These volcanoes are named Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl and they are still active to this day. The volcanoes' mythology states that they were once lovers, who desired to be together forever. The gods answered their request and made them into mountains that will stand side-by-side for eternity. Encircling this outstanding view are the words, "1 onza Plata Pura," "2011," and "Ley .999." In English, this saying means "1 ounce pure silver," and "by law, .999 pure." The reverse of the coin is of Mexico's national seal, the eagle eating a snake. In this case, the eagle represents courage and immortality and its eating its adversary, the snake.

The Mexican mint is one of the oldest mints in the Americas and has quite the reputation among other countries. The Mexican Mint was first established in 1585 by the Spanish ruler, Antonio de Mendoza. He issued a decree from the Spanish Crown to build the first mint in the Americas. In 1921, the Mexican Mint made a gold coin called the Centenario, that represents the 100th year anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain. These coins are pure silver, guaranteed to be brilliant uncirculated, and are packaged in plastic flips for orders under 20. For orders of 20 coins or more, the coins come in mint tubes. The Mexican Libertads series' popularity is quickly spreading all over the world. Coin collectors patiently anticipate the annual release of these remarkable, historical coins.
