Details

The 1985-Mo Mexico Silver Libertad represents one of the earliest and most desirable years of the modern Libertad bullion series, struck by the historic Casa de Moneda de México. Composed of 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, this issue is particularly sought after due to its relatively low early mintage and its status as part of the first generation of Libertads introduced in 1982.

The obverse features the iconic Winged Victory, also known as the Angel of Independence, standing gracefully atop a pedestal with outstretched wings. Behind her, the towering volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl create a dramatic landscape. Inscriptions include “1 Onza,” “Plata Pura,” and the date “1985 Mo,” along with “Ley .999,” denoting its silver purity. This design is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in modern bullion coinage.

The reverse displays the classic Mexican coat of arms—an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent—encircled by the inscription “Estados Unidos Mexicanos.” Unlike later Libertad issues, this early type features the single, large coat of arms design rather than the ring of historic eagles seen on modern releases, making it especially appealing to collectors seeking original-style Libertads.

Graded MS65 by PCGS, this example exhibits strong mint luster with attractive, natural toning across both surfaces. While minor contact marks are consistent with the assigned grade, the coin maintains excellent eye appeal and sharp detail. Early Libertads in certified Mint State grades continue to gain popularity among both bullion investors and numismatic collectors, offering a compelling blend of silver value, historical significance, and limited availability.
