  • Description:

The 1920-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar is in good to very good condition, containing large amounts of wear with specific details missing, such as Liberty's intricate headpiece or the heraldic eagle's individual feathering. Although very worn and circulated, good to very good coins still have the date of mintage visible. Displaying the "S" mint-mark on its reverse, the 1920-S Walking Liberty was minted at the prominent San Francisco Mint and has an average mintage. The San Francisco Mint has maintained an almost 200 year old reputation of incredibly high quality control and impeccable strikes on their coins, making even their circulated coins seem like a higher grade than what they are.

When the Barber design was ready to retire, the Mint Director held a competition among young artists, to compete for the honor of designing the new half dollar. After the director saw Adolph A. Weinman's design, Weinman was awarded to design the new dime and half dollar. Both designs are famous designs that have acquired an extreme collector following over time. Honoring Liberty's youth by picturing her in action, instead of a stuffy portrait, brings her to life and is a great picture of American pride. The Walking Liberty's obverse displays the Grecian goddess walking through the land of the free and the home of the brave. Although she is dressed in a simple toga, she is ready for battle and is inviting warriors to join her with her outstretched arm. In her other arm, Liberty carries a bundle of olive branches, signifying peace. The rising sun is encroaching on her and beneath her sandaled feet is the coin's date of mintage. The entire patriotic portrait is tied together by the word, "Liberty," on the top of the coin. The reverse reveals a prominent bald eagle, perched on a tree branch. The coin's denomination and mint-mark are both inscribed on the reverse as well.
