  • Description:

After the disappointing reaction to the Eisenhower and Susan B. Anthony Dollars, the US Mint produced the Sacagawea Dollar with lower expectations. Sticking with the smaller size, making for easier transactions, the US Mint didn't overproduce the Sacagawea Dollar. Limiting the number put into actual circulation, the US Mint started production of the Sacagawea in 2000. The Philadelphia Mint was the first mint facility, to be established in the US, by our Founding Fathers. Along with the first mint being built, a Mint Act was also put into place, regulating what and how coins would be minted. Since the Philadelphia Mint was the first mint, it didn't need to mark its coins with a mint-mark. It took the Philadelphia Mint over 200 years to finally add a mint-mark to their coins. The 2006-P Sacagawea Dollar carries that new mint-mark, along with the stunning depiction of Sacagawea.
