  • Description:

The 1958 Roosevelt Dime was minted at the Philadelphia Mint and is in brilliant uncirculated condition. The Philadelphia Mint is the first mint to ever be built in the US. The Founding Fathers realized that the US needed a place to produce coinage to establish a national identity and a means of commerce among citizens. The Coinage Act of 1792 was added into law on April 2, declaring the Philadelphia Mint's importance to the country. At the time, Philadelphia was the capital of the US so it only made sense for it to host the inaugural US Mint. The Coinage Act of 1792 also provided a decimal system for US coinage to abide by and one of the demands was that every US coin should contain "an impression emblematic of liberty." David Rittenhouse was a scientist, who was appointed by George Washington, as the first mint director of the US. The Philadelphia Mint did not place a mint-mark on their coins until recently. An easy way to decipher if a coin was minted at the first mint if it has no mint-mark or, for recent coins, it carries a "P."

The Roosevelt dime is the most current design in US coinage, authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792, and was officially the smallest and thinnest coin in all of the US coins minted. Inspired by the late president, Franklin Roosevelt, the Roosevelt dime was approved for mintage shortly after the president passed. Having a dime named after him, his selfless efforts of finding a cure for polio would always be remembered and supported. Named after the Chief Engraver of the US Mint, the Roosevelt dime's forbearers are among a list of draped bust dimes, capped bust dimes, Seated Liberty dimes, the Barber dime, and the infamous Mercury dime.
