  • Description:

The 1957 Roosevelt Dime is in brilliant uncirculated condition and was minted at the Philadelphia Mint. There were over 160 million dimes minted in 1957. The Philadelphia Mint is the first mint to ever be built in the US. The Founding Fathers realized that the US needed a place to produce coinage to establish a national identity and a means of commerce among citizens. The Coinage Act of 1792 was added into law on April 2, declaring the Philadelphia Mint's importance to the country. At the time, Philadelphia was the capital of the US so it only made sense for it to host the inaugural US Mint. The Coinage Act of 1792 also provided a decimal system for US coinage to abide by and one of the demands was that every US coin should contain "an impression emblematic of liberty." David Rittenhouse was a scientist, who was appointed by George Washington, as the first mint director of the US. The Philadelphia Mint did not place a mint-mark on their coins until recently. You can tell that a coin was minted at the first mint if it has no mint-mark or, for recent coins, it carries a "P.

The Roosevelt dime is the most current design in US coinage. Its predecessors contain a list of draped bust dimes, capped bust dimes, Seated Liberty dimes, the Barber dime, which was named after the Chief Engraver of the US Mint, and the Mercury dime. President Franklin Roosevelt passed away in 1945 and sooner after, a legislation was introduced to update the dime's design and feature the beloved late president. By honoring Roosevelt, with a dime named after him, his efforts of funding the cure for polio would be remembered forever. Until 1965, the Roosevelt dime contained 90% silver, 10% copper.
