  • Description:

James Garfield was the 20th president of the United States and the second president to be assassinated. Although Garfield's presidency was not as long or impactful as Lincoln's, Garfield was still able to accomplish a few important goals. In his short 200 days in office, Garfield energized Naval Power, purged the Post Office of corruption, led a resurgence of presidential authority against senatorial courtesy. Garfield also followed Rutherford B. Hayes' lead as far as advocating rights for the freed African Americans, and purposed an act of civil service reform, which would be signed by Congress. Growing up in humble Ohio, Garfield was raised learning a variety of trades, none of which actually stuck. Garfield is another president who personally fought for the Union Army in the Civil War and was elected to Congress shortly after. Garfield is still the only House member to become president.

When James Garfield was shot twice, it took him over twenty days to actually pass. There was a moment, wherein the country thought he would pull through, but do to the poor sanitary conditions of the day, his condition worsened. On his deathbed, he asked if he would be known in history and unfortunately, his main legacy is his assassination. Like all of the other presidents, that have gone before him, Garfield's portrait is included on the 2011-P Presidential Dollar obverse. His very short term in office is also noted and the coin's date and mint-mark can be found on the rim of the coin. Statue of Liberty is pictured on the reverse, as well as the coin's legal tender value of $1. The Presidential Dollar series are in brilliant uncirculated condition and contain a copper/manganese brass alloy that cause the coin to resemble gold. It also cannot be guaranteed that this roll will come in original packaging.
