  • Description:

James Buchanan was the last president to serve before the Civil War and much of his presidency led to the final succession of the South. Claimed a Democrat, Buchanan served in the House of Representatives, the Senate, and as Secretary of State under president Polk. In fact, Buchanan is the last Secretary of State to serve as president to date. Being stationed in London for most of Pierce's controversial term, Buchanan wasn't connected to the sectional politics that was beginning to dominate the country. Buchanan made numerous efforts to control the peace between the North and South, ultimately leading to the alienation of both sides. Since Buchanan viewed the succession as illegal but also the act of war against the succession illegal as well, there was a stand still between the North and the South. Because of Buchanan's lack of ability to control the two sides, he is noted as one of the worst presidents of the US.

In the 1960's, the US Mint had to switch the metal alloys it was using to produce currency. Instead of using 90% silver, and 10% copper, the Mint switched to a copper nickel alloy that saved a lot of money. When the Presidential Dollar series was being considered, the US Mint noticed the popularity of the Sacagawea dollar's golden hue. The Presidential Dollars are also made from the same composition alloys as the Sacagawea, copper and brass which results to the popular golden color. James Buchanan was the 15th president and his portrait is displayed on the obverse of the 2010-P Presidential Dollar. Statue of Liberty graces the reverse, as well as the coin's legal tender value.
