  • Description:

Some consider 1879 the actual first year of the Morgan silver dollar production, due to the numerous mishaps that occurred in 1878. In 1879, the US Mint cleaned up their act, correcting the mistakes and unpleasant portrayal of the prominent eagle. Instead of 7 tail feathers, the eagle was awarded 8. Instead of the pathetic-looking eagle with a caved-in chest, the eagle was given a proud and puffed chest instead. Your 1879 Morgan was minted in Philadelphia and doesn't carry a mint-mark. The Philadelphia Mint was the first mint to be established in the US. The US desperately needed an identity but also a means to international commerce so the Founding Fathers decided that a national mint was the answer. The Mint Act officially announced the opening of the Philadelphia Mint and also instituted guidelines for the newly minted currency. Your 1879 Morgan is considered to be in good-very good condition, with the date still readable.
