The 1887 Great Britain Gold Double Sovereign, also known as the Two Pounds coin, was issued during Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee year, marking 50 years of her reign. This certified NGC MS62 example features the Jubilee Head portrait of Queen Victoria on the obverse, designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm, with the Queen shown crowned, veiled, and facing left. The legend reads “VICTORIA D:G: BRITT: REG:F:D:,” identifying her as Queen of the Britains and Defender of the Faith. This Jubilee portrait was introduced in 1887 and became one of the most recognizable late Victorian coinage designs.
The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic St. George and the Dragon design, one of the most enduring motifs in British gold coinage. St. George is shown mounted on horseback, driving his sword into the dragon below, with the date “1887” appearing in the exergue. Struck by The Royal Mint in 22 karat gold, this Double Sovereign carries a denomination of Two Pounds and contains nearly twice the gold content of a standard sovereign. Specifications include a weight of approximately 15.98 grams, .9167 gold fineness, 28.4 mm diameter, and about 2.0 mm thickness.
