The US Mint experiences a setback in 1965, when the price of silver greatly increased. Instead of using 90% silver to produce their coins, the US Mint was required to use only 40% silver on collectible coins only. The rest of the US currency would be made out of a copper-nickel alloy that wouldn't contain any silver. When the Eisenhower dollar was first conceived, after the president and general passed in 1969, its prediction was to be a very popular and collectible series.
