The 1885-S Liberty Head Half Eagle Gold Coin is a classic example of late 19th-century United States gold coinage, struck at the historic San Francisco Mint during the height of the American Gold Rush era. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word “LIBERTY,” surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with a shield, clutching arrows and an olive branch beneath the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the denomination “FIVE D.” This example has been certified PCGS MS63, indicating an attractive Mint State coin with strong original luster and only moderate contact marks consistent with the grade.

The 1885-S issue is a scarcer San Francisco Mint Half Eagle with a relatively low mintage compared to many later Liberty Head gold issues, making it desirable among both gold investors and numismatic collectors. Coins from the San Francisco Mint are especially appreciated for their sharp strikes and rich coloration, and this specimen showcases pleasing eye appeal with warm golden surfaces and strong detail throughout Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers. As a pre-1933 United States gold coin, it also carries historical significance from an era when gold circulated freely in everyday commerce throughout America.
