This 1908-D Indian Head Half Eagle is a $5 gold coin designed by Bela Lyon Pratt and struck at the Denver Mint. This example is graded MS64 by PCGS, indicating a choice uncirculated coin with strong luster, sharp details, and only minimal contact marks. The obverse — the primary design side — features the incuse portrait of a Native American chief in full headdress facing left, with the date “1908” below and thirteen stars arranged around the border. Unlike most U.S. coins, the design elements are recessed into the surface rather than raised, a unique and innovative style introduced in 1908.
The reverse shows an eagle perched on a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. Surrounding inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the denomination “FIVE DOLLARS.” The “D” mintmark below the arrows indicates the Denver Mint. The coin is encapsulated in a PCGS holder, preserving its high-grade condition and original detail.
