Certified US Gold $20 Liberty 1873-S Open 3 AU58 NGC

There were two varieties, minting in 1873, that had a die with a slight error. On some coins, the die made the 3 in the date look like an 8, and on others it it was slightly opened. Although many collectors argue that you can only tell the difference by putting the two varieties side by side, investing in a certified version also helps clarify which is which. It is believed that less of the Open 3 were made than the Closed 3 but the total mintage is reflective of the entire year's. The Certified US Gold $20 Liberty 1873 Open 3 is difficult to find in any high grade so this AU58 is a rarity to collectors. NGC has assigned this coin's grade and has encased it in an official certified holder, stating it's the Open 3.
