The 1900-S Liberty Head Eagle is a classic United States gold coin struck during the height of the late 19th and early 20th century gold era. Minted at the San Francisco Mint, as indicated by the “S” mintmark on the reverse, this $10 gold piece is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, giving it both durability and its rich, warm coloration. Certified by PCGS in MS60 condition, this coin falls at the entry level of Mint State, retaining full mint luster while displaying moderate contact marks consistent with the grade.
The obverse features the iconic Liberty Head design by Christian Gobrecht, depicting Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY,” surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The date “1900” is positioned below. The reverse presents a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch, with the national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” displayed above. Encircling inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the denomination “TEN D.” The Liberty Head Eagle series, produced from 1838 to 1907, played a significant role in U.S. commerce and international trade, particularly in gold-backed transactions during the pre-1933 era.
Coins from the San Francisco Mint are often sought after due to their historical association with Western expansion and gold circulation. The 1900-S issue is a solid representative of the series, offering both numismatic and intrinsic gold value. Encapsulated in a PCGS holder for authenticity and preservation, this piece is an excellent option for collectors seeking a genuine Mint State example of a historic American gold coin.
