This 1871 Shield Nickel is certified PR62 by PCGS. Struck in proof format at the Philadelphia Mint, it represents the first United States five-cent series made from a copper-nickel alloy. Designed by James Barton Longacre, the Shield Nickel introduced a durable alternative to the silver half dime.
