Being the second year of production, the 1879-S Morgan is a collector's favorite for their collection. The US Mint made several mistakes with the first Morgan, in 1878, and righted the wrongs in 1879. The San Francisco Mint was established over 20 years before the Morgan's production began. The California based mint was the result of the overflow of prospectors to the area, mining for gold. In its first year of production, it produced 4 million coins from gold and silver.
